Healthy Living

The Healthy Living Department of the Area Agency on Aging offers opportunities to enhance the quality of life and improve the wellbeing of older adults. The department delivers evidence-based programs proven to empower older adults to take control of their health and provides health education on critical issues.

The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program and the Diabetes Self-Management Program give the participants the tools they need to better care for their health as they live each day with their chronic health condition.

Matter of Balance and Tai Ji Quan Moving for Better Balance focus on falls, another major health issue with our target audience. These evidence-based programs address physical, social, and cognitive factors related to aging and mobility and teach fall prevention strategies through exercise and strengthening muscles.

The Arthritis Foundation's Walk with Ease Program and Tai Chi for Arthritis help to reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis, increase balance, strength and walking pace and improves overall health.

We also address the needs of caregivers in the community by providing Powerful Tools for Caregivers workshops, an evidence-based program that provides caregivers with the tools they need to manage their emotions to reduce guilt, anger, and depression and guide them to come up with strategies to better handle their unique caregiving challenges and their personal health.

All programs are presented through in-person group settings as well as in a virtual setting. While this has proven to be successful for those we have reached, we also know there is a large population that can benefit but cannot afford the equipment and services to attend virtually. Subject to availability, we are pleased to be able to offer equipment through our lending library. We provide one-on-one training and the iPad remains with the participant throughout the selected workshop.
