Robert D. Miller - The Palm Beach Post School Volunteer Award Recipient

An unknown person stated, “Volunteers are not paid ~ not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless!” It is no doubt that this author was referring to selfless philanthropists like Palm Beach County’s school volunteer, Robert D. Miller, Jr.

Almost everyone in the district knows Robert Miller in some capacity (or, by the colorful and stylish suits and coordinated outfits he wears every day). Even though Miller is a common last name, Robert D. Miller, Jr. is anything but common!

Mr. Miller is a retired veteran who has volunteered his time at the elementary, middle and high school levels. He has served on PTA/PTO and the School Advisory Council for several of the schools in the county, raising and donating money for school programs and trips. Mr. Miller began volunteering over 46 years ago even before the District began its form volunteer program and he has logged 300 hours just this year.

Ever since Mr. Miller’s children attended school, he served as a father and grandfather figure to hundreds of students in Palm Beach County. This generous volunteer has gone so far as to seek out meals for the families of school-aged children and deliver the food directly to their homes.

As an Army veteran, Mr. Miller has visited different elementary schools to share his experiences with students on Veteran’s Day. He serves as a mentor as well as a motivational speaker.

He is a staple at most Palm Beach Lakes High School athletic functions volunteering his time selling game tickets, working in the concession stand and being a chaperone for all of the in and out of county basketball games.

Probably most notable is his service as a school security and police aide. He has spent many years manning the Palm Beach Lakes High School entrance, checking license plates and driver’s licenses to ensure the safety of all students. He also helps with overall school safety by standing “on duty” during school lunches. His presence has resulted in fewer student altercations.

No matter the task at hand, Robert D. Miller, Jr., in grand fashion and style and with a smile on his face, is so loved and appreciated. No amount of money could ever repay him for all that he does for our students and schools. He is, as the unknown author put it…PRICELESS!
